1937 Chris Craft Custom Runabout - 'What Fun'
Owner: George Plamondon
Home Port: Chicago, IL

Purhased in 1973 for $1 (plus legal fees!), the What Fun has usually lived up to its name! Fully restored, 2000-2008. The WHAT FUN is a 1937 17’ Chris Craft custom runabout, acquired September 23, 1973 for $1 (and attorney’s fees of $10). At that time, I began the initial restoration but despite these efforts, the boat continued to sink. It was left in storage for more than 25 years, until the turn of this century -- when the fix-up really began. An uphill battle, but I’m gaining on it! The vessel’s name comes from another project of mine -- a 1969 BMW motorcycle with a side-car ride that I restored. While I was riding the bike on the Gold Coast of Chicago, a female onlooker commented, “What fun.” I couldn’t have agreed more, and thought her words might also apply to my boat. The name can be taken two ways: when it’s running, “What Fun!”; when not running, “What Fun?”

1930 Elco Marinette - 'Elizabeth'
Owner: Joe Thomas
Home Port: Bayside, WI

"Elizabeth" is a variation of the stock Elco 27 and turns heads and draws a crowd everywhere she goes. "Elizabeth" is a remarkable, complete and well-balanced combination of desirable qualities packed into this 26' wooden classic. In the bow you will find the playpen type of cushioned area that can easily seat four people. Under this area is the cabin trunk or storage space for ground tackle, and also lockers and drawers for clothing accessible from the interior cabin. The main cockpit aft is remarkably large for a boat of this size. It is fitted with a comfortable lazy seat across the stern. The remainder of the cockpit is open like a small dance floor or hang out area. This open area of the cockpit can also use chairs, table, etc. The steering wheel together with instruments, controls and a chart board are located on the starboard side at the forward end of the cockpit. The windshield has deep side wings extending far enough aft to protect the helmsman thoroughly from the elements. The cabin arrangement comfortably accommodates four to five people. The two transom seats located at the forward end form the lower berths, while their backs hinge upward to form the upper berths (like a bunk bed arrangement) The galley is at the aft end of the cabin and includes a large ice-box, stove, sink, lockers, drawer and shelves. Opposite the galley on the starboard side if the lavatory (head) with the usual fittings. This lavatory has a washbasin, shelves, mirror and toilet. She has an upgraded rudder and interior from the factory. She has an adequate head for convenience and she's safe and steady when underway because of her full keel design. Her rebuilt dependable diesel engine can power her up to 8 knots. Newer aluminum triple axle trailer will allow for long distance trips to any body of water. She draws just over 2 feet and has a protected prop for shallow cruising. Everything on the boat is original except for the head, engine, cushions, and new full boat cover. Boat underwent an extensive refit in the 90's. She has an epoxy fiberglass bottom over the cedar planks with 4 layers of epoxy paint. Completely dry bottom. The engine ifs fully accessible under flush hatches in the cockpit floor and also by some removable steps going down into the cabin area. The starting and ignition switches are just inside the cabin door. Elizabeth is a rare and classic beauty.

1947 Higgins Deluxe run-about - 'Covergirl'
Owner: Jeff Davey
Home Port: Berlin, Wi

This Higgins sports a 327 Gray Marine V8 twin carb 225 hp. She has a top speed of 50 plus mph. We bought this boat from the Eagle River Chain of Lakes in Northern Wisconsin in 1982. After having her in storage for 33 years, we began a two year full restoration. A new bottom, new frames, stringers and decking, new wiring, polished aluminum gas tanks, gauges, all chrome redone, new teak and holly flooring installed were just some of the major items of the restoration. Jeff also detailed the engine and added dual copper exhaust. This boat was originally known as HUDSON BAY and BOAT, now named COVERGIRL because we own a custom marine canvas company and Renee is known as the "cover girl".

1962 Budych Hacker Utility - 'THUMPER'
Owner: William Budych Jr.
Home Port: Lake Geneva, WI

Hi! My name is THUMPER. I was conceived in 1960 and born in 1962. My builder, William Budych Sr., was a well known mechanical engineer and boat builder. In 1960, William Budych Sr. was employed by Mr. Russell Gage of Gage Marine. At that time William Budych Sr. was responsible for the production of the 22ft. Gage Hackers. His responsibilities included tank testing the models at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, patterning and fabrication all the patterns for the hulls structure; also, overseeing the production process. The first hull built plowed bad so Sr. decided to remove some of the chine, run out the stern. Due to these changes the builds that came after handled and performed well. William Sr. decided it was time to build one of his own and the production of me started, in his mother's garage for a personal boat of his own; during his free time. I think my appearance speaks for Sr's. excellent craftsmanship and attention to detail. I am grateful that my owners, all Geneva Lakefront families, have taken great care and maintained me above and beyond the usual; for the last 51 years. My creator, William Budych Sr., also is well known for building the Water Safety Patrol Boat #1; with the assistance of Duane (Dude) Assman. It is, to this day, the only existing (in service) wood patrol boat in the U.S. at this time. William Budych Sr. passed away peacefully in his home on December 5, 2008. He created a huge legacy of being an excellent mechanical engineer, 1st class boat builder; along with being a very successful business man. He was also and excellent father and teacher. I am very proud and pleased that I have come back home to the Budych family. I was purchased by Sr's son, William Budych Jr. in 2012. Jr. continues to operate Sr's marine business that was created over 45 years ago. Jr. has been involved for 35 years and had the great opportunity to operate as President and owner of 20 years. I know that I am now in the best care and will enjoy the Budych family for generations to come. THUMPER

I'm truly blessed to be the temporary custodian of this labor of love & work of art. Enjoy this celebration of wooden boats, the friends we keep, the past memories we share and those we look to the future with beyond the next wave, setting sun, & rise of a harvest moon.

Boat was #58 of 149 made in its 2 model years, 1959-1960. Length 24' Width 8' Engine Chris-Craft Marine Model 283 185 HP  The Boat has original Hull & Upholstry with minor changes to interior. (Floor covering & drink holders added)  It has an original Chris-Craft option 2nd row seat in front of the engine box, andalso original Convertable top.  I purchased the Boat locally & was told it came from Lake Tahoe (Which was painted on transom) At some point in its history, it spent some time in Ohio, since it has a Brass Plaque designating it a "Historical Watercraft" from the Ohio DNR One of its best features is the adjustable opening Windscreen, each side separately adjustable.  I call it the Air Conditioner.  Another unique feature is the Porthole like opening in the forward deck. This opens & has a screen below allowing ventilation and the possibility of sleeping overnight in the forward compartment.  The boat is moored here at the Abbey & is used frequently. Its a great boa

1952 Chris Craft Holiday - 'Lucky Penny'
Owner: Keith Pozulp
Home Port: Williams Bay, WI

The "Lucky Penny" is a 1952 23' Chris Craft Holiday with the original 158hp MBL engine, original chrome hardware, and mostly original woodwork. The 23' Holiday was built between 1950 and 1953 and the "Lucky Penny" is 1 of 88 ever built with it being hull number 86. A complete restoration was first started in 2004 by the Fox River Valley Boat Company and she is still maintained by Tom Wagner and his crew. Last year the hull and topside was stripped of all varnish, caulk, and paint and 8 to 12 coats of new varnish was applied along with new caulk striping on the bow. Over the years we have been diligent in keeping the "Lucky Penny" as original as possible to truly feel what boating was like nearly 65 years ago. Now she spends all of her time cruising the beautiful waters of Geneva Lake from her home port of Williams Bay.

1957 Chris Craft Continental - 'Birchwood'
Owner: Karen Birch
Home Port: Barrington, IL

This boat was purchased new in February of 1957 by Karen's late parents, Robert and Maxine Birch, of Griggsville, IL. Her dad became a Chris Craft dealer in 1956 and Karen has his original franchise certificate. This boat is all original and Karen has the boat's original order form, invoice, service manuals, prop, fenders, hand spot light, ladder and water skies that her dad used. Her dad's captain hat sits so proudly on the boat's dash. Karen uses one of the original canvas boat covers that had never been used and was being stored in her dad's attic. This boat spent most of its time on the Illinois River in central Illinois where Karen has great family memories. The last time the boat was in the water was in the summer of 1978 on the Mississippi river. Since then the boat had been sitting on her original cradle and boat trailer in a machine shed on the family farm. In May of 2010 the boat was transported by flatbed to McHenry, IL where it was completely restored by Fox River Valley Boat Company. The boat was never named so Karen choose "Birchwood" in memory of her late parents. Karen's late parents are always with her on this boat and this boat is a constant reminder of how wonderful her parents were and the fabulous childhood they gave her.

1959 Century Resorter - 'Fifty-Nine'
Owner: Jim Hayek
Home Port: Davenport, Ia

She is #135 of 180 produced in 1959. She is made with the classic "Carrier Deck" front end which gives the hull a beautiful contour of mahogany. And, one of the dryest rides on plain by rolling out the wake. She has the Graymarine V8 327 cu. in. engine which produces 225 HP and will run 45 mph at 4000rpm. But that is rare because she now is over 50 yrs. old. And as all wooden boat she just like to idle along and rumble... They came with a sliding leather convertible top, which I don't own because Matt Byrne won't sell me his with out the boat under it. She also came with a built in 3 rung ladder mounted on the back. She's real fine my "Fifty-Nine"

1963 Thompson & Thompson Breakers
Owner: Robert Oday
Home Port: Cary, IL

This is what I call an “Oh by the way” boat. Four years ago we were in the market for a 60’s vintage outboard motor. We located one in suburban Milwaukee and drove up to take a look. The motor was great and we agreed to buy it and then the “Oh by the way” came up – Oh by the way if you want the motor you need to take the boat and trailer as well! At first glance this boat would never see the water again as it had a nice hole in the hull and delaminating wood. On the way home all I was thinking about was how could I turn it into a bar? Well after getting it home my ideas went up in smoke, as after my son Mitchel, our neighbor Andrew Vogeler and I looked it over, all we would need to do is make the hull repair, varnish and paint and we would have a good all original user boat. So, after a winters worth of work, another wood boat got added to the collection.

1960 Chetek Princess - 'Why Not!'
Owner: Ron Campana
Home Port: Thomspn, IL

My 1960 Chetek Princess, Model 184, has the original Johnson 75 horsepower V4 outboard motor.  The boat and motor had been out of service and stored in a Fulton, IL garage for 26 years before I purchased it in June 2013.  The last time the boat was in the water was 1988.  I started the refinishing process in the fall of 2013 in my garage.  I stripped the bottom and sides to the bare wood, re-screwed the bottom, and used epoxy to fix an area that had roller damage.  The sides were painted with two coats of  special white paint, and the bottom was painted with two coats of copper bronze paint. The motor need a general tune-up and general maintenance work after sitting for 26 years.   New interior cushions were made along with a matching convertible top and towing cover.
My Chetek boat was made in a factory in Chetek, Wisconsin.  The factory operated from 1946 to 1964 when it burned down.  I have spent more that 200 hours restoring my Chetek to nearly original condition, and I enjoy taking it to Midwest boat shows. I'm really happy with how my Chetek turned out, since this is my first wood boat restoration.  I am proud that I received 2nd place in the outboard category at the Fox Lake Boat Show this July.

1940 Ole Lind Boatworks - Detroit Lakes Minnesota Cedar plank utility runabout - 'Overkill'
Owner: Michael Furibondo
Home Port: Chicago, IL

This is my Ole Lind Boatworks cedar plank runabout from 1940.  The last time this boat was in the water was in 1984 and it was recently discovered in a garage right here in Fontana, Wisconsin!
This is my first restoration project and it has been an amazing learning experience, not to mention much more work than I had anticipated.  When complete, she will be powered by a 1958 Mercury Mark58s, have a new mahogany deck, and will hopefully float!

1955 Century Imperial Sportsman Runabout - 'Dad's 55'
Owner: Mark Stanke
Home Port: Inverness, IL

Dad’s 55 -- 1955 Century Imperial Sportsman Runabout 14ft, 1955 Johnson 25hp motor and original Tee Nee trailer My Dad bought this Century in 1956 with funds he saved from his Army draft service. Dad and Mom went boating every summer weekend in the Chicago area and were married in 1958. As a family, we had annual camping trips across the US, which always featured boating. Dad’s Century joined us from Wisconsin to Florida, the Rocky Mountains to Nova Scotia, Michigan to Texas and most places in between. We all learned to ski and then master the Adolph Kiefer Banana Slalom pulled by this Johnson 25hp. I bought the Century from Dad in 1982, was married in 1984 and keeping with tradition our daughter first learned to ski behind it too. We have had many boats over the years, but the one we truly love and learned the most from is … Dad’s 55.

1970 Streblow Sport Utility - 'Mr T III'
Owner: Don Taylor
Home Port: Williams Bay, WI

In February 2001, I purchased a 1970 Streblow custom wood boat. This twenty three foot beauty had a great history that accompanied the boat Namely, a gentleman from northern Illinois, William D. Wallace, was a partner in a silver mine with John ‘Duke’ Wayne Wallace purchased the boat new from the Streblow factory in Kenosha, WI.,and they decided to name the boat “HI LO SILVER”, a very fitting name. They operated the pleasure craft on Lake Delavan in Wisconsin, for almost ten years.  John Wayne passed away in 1979. With the drop in the price of silver in 1980, they decided to sell the boat. Larry Streblow and son Randy purchased the boat and retuned it to their factory in Kenosha. The Streblow family remodeled the boat and kept it for personal use for a couple of years until it was sold to Gregg Liebovich from Rockford, Illinois. He kept the boat for eighteen years on Geneva Lake. After cruising Geneva Lake over the summer, I load the boat and haul it on my annual journey back to Lake Eustis, Florida, where I, along with the help of my friends, refinished the boat and renamed it ‘Mister T III’. John Wayne would be impressed with the revitalization of “HI LO SILVER.”

1958 Streblow Rebel - 'Rebel'
Owner: Eric Moberg
Home Port: Johnburg, IL

Eric and Kathy's 1958 Streblow Rebel 19' is one of the oldest surviving Streblow inboards. It was purchased as a derelict in 1994, and was refurbished by the Moberg family over the next 3 years. Most of the planking is original. The Rebel is one of only two 19' Streblows built in 1958, and has the original Cal Connell Cadillac Crusader 390 cu. in. engine. Only one other Streblow used this engine, which was the most powerful engine available in 1958. The Rebel is used regularly on the Fox Chain in Northern Illinois.

1978 Streblow Runabout - 'Fire Escape'
Owner: Leonard Bonnevier
Home Port: Oak Forest, Il

Originally built in Kenosha Wisconsin, by the Streblow Family in 1978 and  purchased and operated on Geneva Lake by the Schriber family until we purchased  the boat in 2001.  After we purchased the boat, we did a light refinish on  the exterior and totally replaced the interior, no mechanical work outside  routine annual maintenance has been required.  The boat was never named  under the Schriber family ownership, so I thought long and hard as to why I have  this boat and finally came up with an appropriate name.  After a 36  year career in the Fire Department, the name "Fire Escape"  seemed to fit the bill.  Now she sees continual service all summer long  providing my wife and I along with family and friends the pleasure of crossing  the waters of Geneva Lake in a true classic boat.
